Frame restoration
& Gilding
Frames are more than just decorative borders, they are an essential part of the artwork itself. Over time, frames can suffer from wear, damage, or loss of their original finish, diminishing both their beauty and value.
At The Northern Gilder, I specialise in the careful restoration and conservation of picture frames, from minor repairs to full structural and decorative restoration. This includes stabilising loose joints, repairing losses, recreating missing ornament, and restoring original finishes.
Gilding is a key part of this process. Using traditional techniques and materials, I can reapply gold or metal leaf to bring back the richness, depth, and elegance of the original surface, whether that’s bright, burnished gold or a more subtle aged patina.
Each frame is treated individually, with respect for its history and character, ensuring the final result feels authentic rather than over-restored. Whether your frame is antique, decorative, or sentimental, I can help return it to its former presence.
Washline work
Washlines are a traditional decorative technique used in mount design, consisting of fine hand-painted lines applied to the surface of a mount board. Though subtle, they add a refined and highly bespoke detail that enhances the presentation of artwork.
A washline mount is ideal for works on paper such as prints, watercolours, drawings, and photographs. It can help guide the eye toward the artwork, add depth, and complement colours within the piece without overpowering it.
Each washline is applied by hand using watercolour or pigment, allowing for complete control over tone, spacing, and style. This means every mount can be tailored specifically to the artwork and the client’s preference, whether you’re after something minimal and elegant or more decorative and traditional.
Washlines are particularly effective for conservation framing, where the goal is to elevate the artwork while maintaining a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship.
Object restoration
Beyond frames, I offer restoration of a wide range of objects, particularly those made from wood, and mixed materials. This can include decorative items, sculptures, furniture elements, and unique or unusual pieces.
Restoration work may involve cleaning, stabilising fragile areas, repairing structural damage, filling losses, and recreating missing details. Where appropriate, original finishes can be matched or sympathetically reintegrated to ensure the piece retains its character.
Every object presents its own challenges, and I approach each project with a problem-solving mindset, combining traditional methods with practical experience. Whether the item holds monetary value or personal significance, the aim is always to preserve its integrity and extend its life.
